The finer details

Stellenbosch

The beautiful little town of Stellenbosch, roughly an hour from Cape Town, lies surrounded by the Stellenbosch Mountains in the Jonkershoek River Valley in one of the most picturesque settings in the Cape. The second oldest town in South Africa has fondly been called ‘Eikestad’ or city of oaks, and its streets are lined with some of the most beautiful surviving examples of Cape Dutch, Georgian and Victorian architecture in the Cape.

Travel

Stellenbosch is conveniently located within the Western Cape, approximately 30 minutes from the airport.  If you’re planning to travel within Cape Town and its surroundings, we’d recommend using a reputable car hire company, as seen below. If you’re planning to go wine tasting, please make use of Uber and download the app before you arrive.

Where to Stay

From vineyard cottages and mountain manors, to quirky boltholes and contemporary eco cabins, these are our Stellenbosch accommodation picks.

Activities

Spier Wine Farm

Spier is the archetypal wine farm, with Cape Dutch buildings, gorgeous gardens and a river running through it. There is much on offer, from visiting a bird-of-prey sanctuary and browsing the craft market to wine tastings or picnics beside the dam.

Delaire Graff

Situated on the panoramic Helshoogte Pass, Delaire Graff (owned by international jeweller Laurence Graff) is the ultimate package, offering incredible views of the Banhoek Valley, sophisticated interiors and superb dining.

Lanzerac

The third-oldest farm in Stellenbosch (founded just 13 years after the town itself, over 330 years ago), and the first to commercially bottle and sell pinotage, Lanzerac is a majestic slice of history and Jonkershoek scenery, and a quintessential Winelands landmark.

Bartinney

Set on the dramatic slopes of the Botmaskop, overlooking the picturesque Banhoek Valley, their belief is that every aspect must work in harmony: agriculture with nature, people with animals, sustainability with excellence.

Indochine at Delaire Graff

Unrivalled views, superb service and world-class cuisine made using fresh ingredients plucked daily from the estate’s biodynamic garden and greenhouse, Indochine at Delaire Graff represents everything people adore about the Cape Winelands

Chefs Warehouse Maison

Maison, on the edge of the historic Franschhoek village, offers a contemporary set menu for lunch or dinner. It’s a riff on traditional tasting menus and small-plate sharing experiences, served in four courses. Kelly’s favourite Chef’s Warehouse is Beau Constantia.

The Fat Butcher

As the name implies, the Fat Butcher is all about the meat. A classic steakhouse with a Stellenbosch vibe, it’s in a historic building in the centre of town with wooden floors, leather booths and a shaded courtyard at the back.

Jordan Restaurant

With global influences from years spent working abroad under names such as Gordon Ramsay and Heston Blumenthal, his sizzling new menu at Jordan Wine Estate merges classic flavours, innovation and flawless execution.

Tree-top Hopping

Channel your inner Tarzan by tree-hopping and ziplining (with the help of a guide) through the forest for uninterrupted thrills.

Strawberry Picking

Grab a basket and roam around the fields, picking and snacking on delicious strawberries.

Miniature Steam Train

Hop on board at Park Station, wait for the puffs of steam and whistles, then enjoy the seven-minute ride on a 760-metre stretch of track through a park that includes a bridge and a tunnel.

Strand Beach

A resort town on the eastern shore of False Bay with a beautiful, white 5km long beach, Strand (“beach” in Afrikaans) is an ideal family stop for swimming, sunbathing and beach activities. A promenade featuring a mix of restaurants, cafés and shops follows the shoreline.
